It's Market Time!
Buyers from all of the major retailers come to make selections for their specialty shops and department stores, online storefronts and mail order catalogs. The difference in the January/June markets and the rest of the year is the sheer volume of merchants. The trade center is not open to the public as it is a wholesale facility, however, clients can go with their designer/architect.
The campus is the largest wholesale merchandise resource in the world, yielding nominally 4 million, yes, I said 4 MILLION square feet of showrooms. Retailers from around the globe source a wide range of products ranging from home furnishings, gifts, decorative accessories, lighting, garden accessories and gourmet items to textiles, fashion accessories and women's, men's, children's and western apparel. The facility has more than 50 markets each year attended by more than 200,000 buyers. Being turned loose in the World Trade Center is like a mouse in a maze.
Why do I tell you this? Because for the past several years, I have taken clients to market on tailored trips to furnish their custom homes. It provides them an opportunity to literally shop until they drop, all the while experiencing an endless limit to their own creativity, and providing possibilities beyond their wildest dreams. We get so hooked into shopping locally and seeing the same styles, colors, and brands to furnish our homes, that this is literally a candy store for anyone who wants to be dazzled, all the while having the time of their lives!
It has taken me more than ten years of going to market and exploring the trade center to be able to confidently arrange a productively tailored shopping trip for a specific client, but this is a service that is now offered. People who are building homes or remodeling homes let me know exactly what they need and an inclusive trip is planned. There are two levels of accommodation:
Level I
Includes all amenities (hotel, airfare, daily pickup from the hotel, all meals).
Level II
Those wanting to spend less on trip charges can arrange their own trip and meet me at the trade center where we will spend the time needed to shop and make purchases for their specific decor tastes, budgets and timeframes.
During the non-Super-Market times, the trade center is still open with all of the permanent showrooms available, which is still close to 2 million square feet of showrooms. Custom trips are still available year round and coordinated to be just as productive as the super market trips.
The benefit of a custom tailored shopping trip like this is two fold: first, you get an expertly planned trip by a professionally registered interior designer, and are not aimlessly wandering shops and showrooms trying to decide and coordinate your home; and secondly, the time savings doing this is astounding. Anyone who has shopped to furnish a new home understands how time consuming this can be.
Various fee arrangements apply for these services based on the level of accommodation. You may contact the Studio if this is something of interest to you.
