Working with custom interiors, I try to provide trade resources to clients that provide truly unique, almost one of a kind, pieces for the finer interiors requiring finer furnishings.
Furniture over the past fifteen years has become proportionately larger. There are many theories and discussions on why, but the agreement is fairly universal that if you want smaller scaled or appropriately scaled furniture for smaller architectural spaces, then the resources become increasingly more difficult to find. Not so much with dining furniture, but with sofas, chairs, ottomans, side tables, armoires. The scale is massive when you begin considering these pieces for a home with eight foot ceilings. I call it "marshmallow furniture," because as soon as you walk into one of these homes, the furniture just seems really puffy for the space.
Decorative Crafts has imported some of the finer small scaled quality furnishings and reproductions of Italian and Asian influenced pieces since 1928 so they must be doing something right.
